First church mosque in the world (2014–2015)
After setting up a kindergarten and a therapy center for traumatized female genocidaires, we built a reconciliation center and interfaith prayer house for imprisoned genocidaires in Gitarama prison. The meeting center offers female inmates in particular the opportunity to do handicrafts. The building is designed so that it can be used as a prayer room by both Muslims and Christians.
Reconciliation center and kindergarten in Gitarama (2010–2011)
In 2011, the Green Helmets had the opportunity to build a kindergarten and therapy center for imprisoned post-traumatically stressed genocidaires and their children in Gitarama prison. This first Rwandan facility for the perpetrators of the genocide was built together with many peaceful, life-sentenced perpetrators of the genocide.
Nelson Mandela Vocational School (2007–2013)
In consultation with President Paul Kagame, the Green Helmets built a vocational school for construction engineers and solar technicians in Rwanda from 2006 to 2012. During this time, almost 50 Green Helmets volunteers helped with the construction of the buildings and the supervision of the facility. Due to the good training of the graduates, the Rwandan government planned to set up two further training courses. As part of the solar technology training, the Green Helmets worked with the trainees to install the second largest solar system in the country at the time.
