Automotive Training Workshop in Ziguinchor (since 2016)
In collaboration with the Spiritan Order, the Green Helmets have established an auto repair shop in Ziguinchor, in the Casamance region, where young people are trained as automotive mechanics. The training workshop is designed to service both older and newer vehicle models – a groundbreaking development for the region. Until now, repairs of newer car models have been virtually impossible due to the lack of technically well-equipped workshops. The tools and equipment for the new automotive workshop were donated by Nussbaum in 2013. The Casamance region in southern Senegal is considered particularly impoverished and economically disadvantaged.
From 2023 onwards, the Spiritans began taking on increasing responsibility. A significant milestone was reached in April 2024 with the official transfer of workshop management from the Green Helmets to the Spiritans. Of course, the Green Helmets continue to provide advisory support from Germany. Additionally, we will continue to provide financial support for the project initially.
Community Center for the Mining Town of Bantako/Kedougou (2017-2018)
In August 2017, we Green Helmets launched our third project in Senegal. Working with our project partner from the automotive workshop in Ziguinchor – the Spiritan Order – we created a community center for the people of the gold mining town of Bantako, where there is a critical need for education about alternative income opportunities. The center particularly aims to show parents that alternatives exist to having young children work in the mines. Additionally, the community center provides access to annual medical examinations for the many victims of forced prostitution in the area.
Birthing Center for the Town of Kougnara (2017)
In the South Senegalese village of Kougnara, the Green Helmets have built a birthing center that includes a delivery room, a consultation room, a reception area, sanitary facilities, and a recovery room for new mothers. To ensure an adequate supply of clean drinking water, the birthing center was equipped with a well approximately 40 meters deep. The town of Kougnara has about 2,500 inhabitants and is located in the Sédhiou region.
