Health stations for rural Sierra Leone (since 2022)
During the Ebola epidemic between 2014 and 2016, it once again became clear how poor healthcare is in Sierra Leone. Since then, some international aid money has flowed into the construction of hospitals and clinics in the country, but it is still not possible to speak of a good supply situation – especially not in remote regions where there are no paved roads. There is not only a lack of well-trained doctors, medicines and equipment, but often also buildings. In coordination with the local health authorities, we Green Helmets have therefore started to build health stations including “Mothers Shelters” for heavily pregnant women. Project start: early 2022 in the villages of Seremodu in Mansonia. At the beginning of 2023, after completion in Seremodu, another construction project was also started in Bamboria.
Schools for the beleaguered Sierra Leone (since 2018)
So far we have built five schools in Sierra Leone. We are always active in remote places where little help would otherwise arrive. We launched our pilot project in 2018 in the small town of Gbentu in the north-east of the country. In Gbentu, we expanded an elementary school that only had two classrooms. In addition to six new classrooms, dormitories were also created for the teachers, who often come from distant villages and were previously housed in temporary accommodation in Gbentu.
We have since built four more schools in Sierra Leone: An elementary school in the village of Maramaia, a junior secondary school (grades 7-9) and a senior secondary school (grades 10-12) in the village of Mansadu and a secondary school in the town of Tambia Balia. In Tambia Balia the pupils had to learn in a church before. We are happy that they now have good conditions to learn!
Reports from Sierra Leone:
“Anything can be taken from you, but not your education”
We are celebrating a key handover in Sierra Leone: we are delighted to report on the opening of the new junior secondary school in Tambia Balia.
